Pack 122 based at Sally Curtis Elementry in Beaumont, TX visited Bicycle Sports today.
Led by Kyle Fretz, an Eagle Scout, we completed all the requirements for the Cycling Pin and all but the riding requirement for the Cycling Belt Loop in one Cub Scout Go and See Adventure.
Pack Leaders are Mrs Gavrellos & Mrs Smith.
Here we discussed bicycle safety. Bikes are vehicles, turn signals, ride on the right side of the road (it's the law), wear brightly colored clothing, lights after dark and most importantly...
...the importance of wearing a properly fitted helmet. we discussed lives that had been saved and quality of life preserved because of helmets. We hope it leaves a favorable impression on the kids as to the importance of wearing a helmet.
PARENTS:: We need your support!! There are no helmet laws, and there doesn't need to be. Law needs to come from within the home. You are in charge, not the kids! Make your kids WEAR A
HELMET when cycling.
We learned the basics of bicycle maintenance... how to air tires, lube chains and clean the bicycle. They brought their own bicycles for an interactive learning experience. Our goals are a bit different- we want the kids to learn proper methods that won't harm the bicycle. Water hoses and WD-40 - BAD!
We had a bicycle rodeo of sorts... a slow race and an obstacle course.
It was fun.
Led by Kyle.
A fine mess of kids!
Tail gate refreshments, water, cheese & crackers hit the spot on this hot SE Texas day.
We witnessed mechanical work being done... but, contrary to Scout Reg's, encouraged the kids NOT to use wrenches on their bikes. Leave it to the Pro's.
It was a wonderful day and I think it's fair to say we ALL had a good time!
