Words to Christmas Songs
There is no doubt in this "land of the free" that I am breaking some
sort of law by putting these words out there for all to enjoy, but let
me also point out that they are not for sale, nor have I pretended
to have written them.  I can only wish.  I love to sing.  I always have
a song in my heart.  It helps me thru the day.  Blessings, e

 SONGS FOR ADVENT AND CHRISTMAS

Kinderlein Kommet (German, from my childhood)
Mary, Did You Know (with Biblical validation)

 Angels We Have Heard on High

  Angels we have heard on high, singing sweetly through the night,
  And the mountains in reply echoing their brave delight.
  Gloria in excelsis Deo. Gloria in excelsis Deo.

  Shepherds, why this jubilee? Why these songs of happy cheer?
  What great brightness did you see? What glad tidings did you hear?
  Gloria in excelsis Deo. Gloria in excelsis Deo.
  Come to Bethlehem and see him whose birth the angels sing
  Come adore on bended knee Christ, the Lord, the new born King.
  Gloria in excelsis Deo. Gloria in excelsis Deo.

  See him in a manger laid whom the angels praise above;
  Mary, Joseph, lend your aid, while we raise our hearts in love.
  Gloria in excelsis Deo. Gloria in excelsis Deo.

 Auld Lang Syne
Should auld acquaintance be forgot,
And never brought to mind?
Should auld acquaintance be forgot,
And days of auld lang syne?

And days of auld lang syne, my dear,
And days of auld lang syne.
Should auld acquaintance be forgot,
And days of auld lang syne?

We twa hae run aboot the braes
And pu'd the gowans fine.
We've wandered mony a weary foot,
Sin' auld lang syne.

Sin' auld lang syne, my dear,
Sin' auld lang syne,
We've wandered mony a weary foot,
Sin' auld ang syne.

We twa hae sported i' the burn,
From morning sun till dine,
But seas between us braid hae roared
Sin' auld lang syne.

Sin' auld lang syne, my dear,
Sin' auld lang syne.
But seas between us braid hae roared
Sin' auld lang syne.

And ther's a hand, my trusty friend,
And gie's a hand o' thine;
We'll tak' a cup o' kindness yet,
For auld lang syne.

For auld lang syne, my dear,
For auld lang syne,
We'll tak' a cup o' kindness yet,
For auld lang syne.

 Away in the Manger

Away in the Manger, no crib for a bed,
the little Lord Jesus lay down his sweet head.
the stars in the sky look down where He lay,
the little Lord Jesus asleep on the hay, hay, hay!

The cattle are lowing, the baby awakes,
the little Lord Jesus, no crying he makes;
I love thee, Lord Jesus, look down from the sky
and stay by my cradle ‘til morning is nigh.

Be near me, Lord Jesus, I ask thee to stay
close by me forever, and love me, I pray;
bless all the dear children in thy tender care,
and fit us for heaven to live with thee there.

 Go, Tell It on the Mountain

Go, Tell It on the Mountain,
over the hills and everywhere;
Go, Tell It on the Mountain,
that Jesus Christ is Born.

While shep-herds kept their watching
o’er si-lent flocks by night,
be-hold through-out the heavens
there shone a ho-ly light.
               (Refrain)

the shep-herds feared and trem-bled,
when lo!  A-bove the earth,
rang out the angels chorus
that hailed the Savior’s birth.
               (Refrain)

Down in a lowly manger
the humble Christ was born,
and God sent us salvation
that blessed Christmas morn.
               (Refrain)

 God Rest You Merry Gentlemen

  God rest you merry, gentlemen, let nothing you dismay;
  Remember Christ our Savior was born on Christmas Day,
  To save us all from Satan’s power when we were gone astray
  O tidings of comfort and joy, comfort and joy,
  O tidings of comfort and joy!

  Now to the Lord sing praises, all you within this place,
  And with true love and charity each other now embrace;
  This holy tide of Christmas doth bring redeeming grace.
  O tidings of comfort and joy, comfort and joy,
  O tidings of comfort and joy!

 Hark the Herald Angels Sing

Hark! The herald angels sing,
“Glory to the newborn king;
Peace on earth, and mercy mild;
God and sinners reconciled.”
Joyful, all ye nations, rise,
Join the triumph of the skies;
With angelic hosts proclaim,
“Christ is born in Bethlehem!”

Hark! The herald angels sing,
“Glory to the newborn king.”

Hark! The herald angels sing
glory to the newborn King!
Mild he lays his glory by,
born that we no more may die,
Born to raise us from the earth,
born to give us second birth.
Risen with healing in his wings,
light and life to all he brings,
(Refrain)

Christ by highest heav’n adored,
Christ, the everlasting Lord:
Late in time, behold him come,
Off-spring of a virgins womb.
Veiled in flesh the God-head see,
Hail th’incarnate Deity!
Pleased as man with men to dwell,
Jesus our Immanuel.
Hail the Heave’n born Prince of Peace!
Hail the Son of righteousness!
(Refrain)

Light and life to all He brings,
Ris’n with healing in His wings.
Mild he lays his glory by,
Born that man no more may die,
Born to raise the sons of earth,
Born to give them second birth.
Hark! The herald angels sing,
“Glory to the newborn king;
(Refrain)

 It Came upon the Midnight Clear

It came upon the midnight clear,
that glorious song of old
from angels bending near the earth,
to touch their harps of gold;
“Peace on the earth Good will to men,
from heaven’s all gracious King”
the world in solemn stillness lay,
to hear the angels sing.

Still thru the cloven skies they come
with peaceful wings unfurled,
and still their heavenly music floats
o’er all the weary world;
above it’s sad and lowly plains,
they bend on hovering wing,
and ever o’er it’s Babel sounds
the blessed angels sing.

And ye, beneath life’s crushing load,
whose forms are bending low,
who toil along the climbing way
with painful steps and slow,
look now!  For glad and golden hours come
swiftly on the wing.
O rest beside the weary road,
and hear the angels sing!

For lo!  The days are hastening on,
by prophet seen of old,
when the ever circling years shall come
the time foretold
when peace shall overall the earth
it’s ancient splendors fling,
and the whole world send back
the song which now the angels sing.

 Joy to the World

Joy to the World, the Lord is come!
Let earth receive her King;
let every heart prepare him room,
and heaven and nature sing,
and heaven and nature sing,
and heaven and heaven and nature sing.

Joy to the world, the Savior reigns!
Let all their songs employ;
while fields and floods, rocks, hills and plains
repeat the sounding joy,
repeat the sounding joy,
repeat, repeat the sounding joy.

No more let sins and sorrows grow,
nor thorns infest the ground;
he comes to make his blessings flow
far as the curse is found,
far as the curse is found,
far as the curse is found,
far as, far as, the curse is found.

He rules the world with truth and grace,
and makes the nations prove
the glories of his righteousness,
and wonders of his love,
and wonders of his love,
and wonders, and wonders of his love,

 Mary, Did You Know

John 11.3 Jesus said to her, "Your brother will rise again."  24 Martha said to Him, "I know that he will rise again in the resurrection at the last day."  25 Jesus said to her, "I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in Me, though he may die, he shall live.  26 "And whoever lives and believes in Me shall never die. Do you believe this?"  37 And some of them said, "Could not this Man, who opened the eyes of the blind, also have kept this man from dying?"

Mary, Did You Know
That your baby boy
will one day walk on water Matthew 14.25 Now in the fourth watch of the night Jesus went to them, walking on the sea.  26 And when the disciples saw Him walking on the sea, they were troubled, saying, "It is a ghost!" And they cried out for fear.
Mary, Did You Know
That your baby boy
will save our sons and daughters John 11.25 Jesus said to her, "I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in Me, though he may die, he shall live.
Did you know
That your baby boy
has come to make you new  John 3.3 Jesus answered and said to him, "Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God."
This child that you’ve delivered
will soon deliver you Luke 11.4 And forgive us our sins,For we also forgive everyone who is indebted to us.And do not lead us into temptation, But deliver us from the evil one."

Mary, Did You Know
That your baby boy
     will give sight to a blind man
Mary, Did You Know
That your baby boy
will calm a storm with His hand  Mark 4.39 Then He arose and rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, "Peace, be still!" And the wind ceased and there was a great calm.
Did You Know
That your baby boy
     has walked where angels trod
And when you kiss your little baby,
     you kiss the face of God  This thought brings tears to my eyes, every time I sing ithis song.

Mary, Did You Know
Mary, Did You Know
The Blind will see Matthew 9.27 When Jesus departed from there, two blind men followed Him, crying out and saying, "Son of David, have mercy on us!"  28 And when He had come into the house, the blind men came to Him. And Jesus said to them, "Do you believe that I am able to do this?" They said to Him, "Yes, Lord."  29 Then He touched their eyes, saying, "According to your faith let it be to you."  30 And their eyes were opened. And Jesus sternly warned them, saying, "See that no one knows it."
The deaf will hear Mark 7.2 Then they brought to Him one who was deaf and had an impediment in his speech, and they begged Him to put His hand on him.  33 And He took him aside from the multitude, and put His fingers in his ears, and He spat and touched his tongue.  34 Then, looking up to heaven, He sighed, and said to him, "Ephphatha," that is, "Be opened."  35 Immediately his ears were opened, and the impediment of his tongue was loosed, and he spoke plainly.
The dead will live again John 11.43 Now when He had said these things, He cried with a loud voice, "Lazarus, come forth!"  44 And he who had died came out bound hand and foot with graveclothes, and his face was wrapped with a cloth. Jesus said to them, "Loose him, and let him go."
     The lame will leap
The dumb will speak Matthew 9.33 And when the demon was cast out, the mute spoke. And the multitudes marveled, saying, "It was never seen like this in Israel!"
     The praises of the Lamb

Mary, Did You Know
That your baby boy
is Lord of all creation John 1.1 IN the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.  2 He was in the beginning with God.  3 All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made.  4 In Him was life, and the life was the light of men.  5 And the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it.
Mary, Did You Know
That your baby boy
     will one day rule the nations
Did You Know
That your baby boy
is Heavens perfect Lamb John 1.29 The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, "Behold! The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!
This sleeping child you’re holding
Is the Great I Am Again, imagine the incredible privilege it was for Mary to have accepted the responsibility when God called her to surrender her body as a vessel thru which God in the flesh would enter this world.  Something I bumped into during a study was that when Mary accepted the commission from the Holy Spirit People do not understand the risk she took.  In her day, if for any reason any number of men around her would have wanted to, they could have brought her up on charges of adultery with obvious proof of guilt.  After all, Mary and Joseph were only engaged.  Her willingness to answer the call literally put her life at risk.  After the birth and weaning of the child, she could have been taken to the gates of the city and stoned to death as punishment for her adultery.  By answering the call of the Holy Spirit, she literally surrendered her life to God, putting her future in His hands.

 O Little Town of Bethlehem

  O little town of Bethlehem, how still we see thee lie!
  Above thy deep and dreamless sleep the silent stars go by;
  Yet in thy dark street shineth the ever lasting Light;
  The hopes and fears of all the years are met in thee tonight.

  O holy Child of Bethlehem, descend to us we pray;
  Cast out our sin and enter in, be born in us today.
  We hear the Christmas angels the great glad tidings tell;
  O come to us, abide with us, our Lord Emmanuel!

 O Come All Ye Faithful
 (Adeste Fidelis)

O come all ye faithful,
Joyful and triumphant,
O come ye, O come ye, to Bethlehem!
Come and behold Him,
born the king of angels!

O come let us adore him
O come let us adore him
O come let us adore him, Christ the Lord.

Sing, choirs of angels,
sing in exultation,
O sing, all ye bright hosts of heav’n above!
Glory to God,
all glory in the highest!

We’ll give Him all the glory,
We’ll give Him all the glory,
We’ll give Him all the glory, Christ the Lord.

Yea, Lord, we greet thee,
born this happy morning,
Jesus, to the be all Glory giv’n;
Word of the father,
now in flesh appearing!

We’ll praise His name forever,
We’ll praise His name forever,
We’ll praise His name forever, Christ the Lord.

 Ode to Joy in German

1. Freude, schoener Goetterfunke, Tochter aus Elysium.
Wir betreten feuertrunken, Himmlische dein Heiligtum.
Deine Zauber binden wieder was die Mode streng geteilt.  Alle Menschen werden Brueder wo dein sanfter Fluegel weilt.

Joy, beautiful spark of God, daughter from Elysium (paradise of the Greek legend).  We are drunk with fire stepping into your (the holy one) holy place.  Your magic unifies what was strictly divided by custom.  All people become brothers where your gentle wings abide.

2. Stanza to “Freude schoener Goetterfunke

He, who achieved the great throwing (toss) of being a friend to a friend.
He, who has won a sweet wife for himself, shall join in  jubilation.
And if anyone has gained only one soul in this earthly life that he can call his own. (he can join in jubilation) And if he could never do this, he may sneak out of this alliance (group, association).

3.  Freude trinken alle Wesen an den Bruesten der Natur;
Alle Guten, alle Boesen folgen ihrer Rosenspur;
Kuesse gab sie uns und Reben, einen Freund geprueft im Tod.  Wollust ward dem Wurm gegeben und der Cherub steht vor Gott.

All beings drink joy on the breasts of nature.  All good ones (people) all bad ones follow her (nature’s) rosy path.
She gave us kisses and grapes, and a friend tried in death.
Lewdness was given to the worm, and the Cherub stands before God.

4.  Freude schoener Goetterfunke, Tochter aus Elysium
Wir betreten feuertrunken Himmlische dein Heiligtum.
Seid umschlungen Millionen, diesen Kuss der ganzen Welt.
Hier stuerzt nieder Millionen?  Ahnest du den Schoepfer,
Welt?

Joy, the beautiful spark of God, daughter from Elysium.
Drunk with fire, heavenly one we enter your holy place.
Be carressed millions, and get this kiss for the whole world.
Here are a million  tumbling down?  Are you foreseeing the Creator, world?

 Silent Night

  Silent night, holy night, all is calm, all is bright
  Round yon virgin mother and child.
  Holy infant, so tender and mild,
  sleep in heavenly peace. Sleep in heavenly peace.

  Silent night, holy night, shepherds quake at the sight,
  Glories stream from heaven afar,
  Heavenly hosts sing alleluia;
  Christ, the Savior, is born. Christ, the Savior, is born!

  Silent night, holy night, Son of God, love’s pure light
  Radiant beams from thy holy face,
  With the dawn of redeeming grace,
  Jesus, Lord, at thy birth. Jesus, Lord, at thy birth.

 O Tannenbaum (Oh Christmas Tree in German)

O Tannenbaum, O Tannenbaum,

Du grünst nicht nur zur Som-mers-zeit,

O Tannenbaum, O Tannenbaum,

 The First Noel [Nowell (Noel or No “L”)]

The first noel the angels did say
was to certain poor shepherds in fields as they lay;
in fields where they lay keeping their sheep
on a cold winters night that was so deep.

(Refrain) Noel, noel, noel, noel, born is the king of Israel.
Then let us all with one accord
Sing prai-ses to our hea-v'nly Lord;
That hath made heaven and earth
And with his blood our life hath bought
Born is the King of Israel.

 Twelve Days of Christ mas
The History & Meaning of the Song

Did you know?

     One Christmas carol that never seemed to make much sense is The Twelve Days of Christmas; that is, until I ran across this explanation.
     From 1558 to 1829, Roman Catholics in England were not permitted to practice their faith openly.  Someone during that era wrote this carol as a catechism song for young Catholics.  It has two meanings: literal, plus a hidden meaning known only to members of their church.  Each element in the carol has a code word for a religious reality which the children could remember.

The twelve drummers drumming symbolized the twelve points of belief in the Apostles Creed.

The eleven pipers piping stood for the eleven faithful disciples.

The ten lords a-leaping stood for the Ten Commandments

Nine ladies dancing were the nine aspects of the fruit of the spirit: Love, Joy, Peace, Patience, Kindness, Goodness, Faithfulness, Gentleness and Self Control.

Eight maids a-milking were the eight beatitudes.

Seven swans a-swimming represented the seven fold gifts of the Holy Spirit: Prophesy, Serving, Teaching, Exhortation, Contribution, Leadership & Mercy.

Six geese a-laying represented the six days of creation (kinda has an Asian flair).

Five golden rings recalled the Pentateuch, the first five books of the Old Testament, or the Books of Law.

Four calling birds were the four Gospels: Matthew, Mark, Luke & John

Three French hens stood for: Faith, Hope & Love

Two turtle doves were the Old & New Testaments

The partridge in the pear tree was Jesus Christ!

     Now when you hear this song, you can hear it with “new” ears.

 Venite Adoremus

  The snow lay on the ground, the stars shone bright,
  When Christ our Lord was born on Christmas night.
  Venite adoremus Dominum. Venite adoremus Dominum.
  Venite adoremus Dominum. Venite adoremus Dominum.

  And thus that manger poor became a throne;
  For he whom Mary bore was God the Son.
  O come, then, let us join the heavenly host;
  To praise the Father, Son, and Holy Ghost.

  Venite adoremus Dominum. Venite adoremus Dominum.
